National swimmer sets third national record in Commonwealth Youth Games

Brunei Darussalam’s swimmer Hayley Wong Ann Yue broke a third national record in a space of two days after clocking a time of 35.19s in the women’s 50 metres (m) breaststroke event at the 7th Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago on Monday.

The swimming star broke the previous national record which was 35.57s, following up her latest accomplishments in the 50m butterfly and 200m breaststroke events.

Brunei’s male swimmer Zeke Chan Zhi Yue set a new personal best in the men’s 100m freestyle event with a time of 54.39s, subsequently eclipsing his old mark of 54.99s in the process.

The national record for the 100m freestyle event for male remains at 54.08s.

Meanwhile, Sharmeen binti Mohammad Mharvin took part in the women’s 50m backstroke event where she recorded a time of 33.68s.

The meet continued with both Hayley and Sharmeen taking part in the 100m breaststroke, Zeke Chan Zhi Yue in the 200m backstroke, and the Brunei Darussalam’s team comprising Joel Ling Thai Yu, Zeke, Hayley and Sharmeen in the mixed 4x100m freestyle relay. – Fadhil Yunus
