Brunei Darussalam’s weightlifter Mohammad Nashrul bin Haji Abu Bakar smashed the national and his personal best record after lifting a combined 227 kilogrammes (kg) in the weightlifting’s 61kg category of the Commonwealth Games 2022 in Birmingham, England yesterday.

The young athlete, who competed in the snatch and in the clean and jerk events, finished sixth in the competition.

Mohammad Nashrul performed outstandingly in the clean and jerk event, completing his three attempts to break the national record.

He lifted 123kg in the first attempt, and kept his momentum to lift 127kg and 132kg in his second and final attempts.

In the snatch event, Mohammad Nashrul lifted 95kg in his first attempt, but failed to lift 100kg in his following attempts.

The previous national record of 212kg was also achieved by Mohammad Nashrul when he won gold in the Singapore Weightlifting International 2022 Commonwealth qualifier in February.
