Brunei withdraws tentative intention to host 2027 SEA Games
Wednesday, December 15, 2021

Brunei Darussalam has withdrawn their tentative intention to host the 2027 Southeast Asian (SEA) Games following a Southeast Asian Games Federation (SEAGF) meeting earlier this month.

The country had initially agreed tentatively to host the 2027 SEA Games subject to final confirmation through the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) to the SEAGF in the middle of this year.

Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Awang Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin said this during the daily COVID-19 press conference yesterday.

The minister said, “Our intention is to tentatively agree to host the 2027 Southeast Asian Games subject to final confirmation.”

“However, after carrying out a detailed assessment, Brunei Darussalam has decided to withdraw from the tentative intention, which was conveyed by the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council during the Southeast Asian Games Federation meeting on December 7, 2021.”

Referring to a report that Brunei Darussalam have withdrawn from the SEA Games, “The source was not official and unknown. The statement was also found to be inaccurate and baseless.”

The minister also shared that current upgrading and renovation works were planned not merely for SEA Games but also for community use, athletes and sport enthusiasts in the long-term.

He said, “Such planning will continue regardless of being host of the SEA Games or not because it is part of the ministry’s plan to upgrade, renovate and repair.”

“Alhamdulillah, several projects have been planned and will be implemented. One of them is the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium, which, Insya Allah, is planned to be completed next year in October 2022.”

“Also, upgrading works at the Menglait Sports Complex have been completed and similar works will also be carried out at the National Indoor Stadium.”
