Monday, December 2, 2013

Malaysian's Alex Liew felled 1951 pins to walk away with the $7,000 cash prize at the Megastrike Invitational Classic Bowling Tournament yesterday.

Liew was far from the favourite going into yesterday's final after he finished 17th with 1548 pins to his name on Friday and 7th knocking down the 1696 to total 3218 on Saturday.

"I am very happy about the win today because the first two games were a bit challenging," Liew told The Brunei Times.

"I made a lot of changes on my ball surface and did some lane adjustments and it worked pretty well.

"Playing pair to pair is different, so we have to make a lot of adjustments so I'm happy for my performance today.

"Hopefully I can come back next year if there are no other tournaments that will clash with this," said the bowler from Selangor who averaged 243.88.

Liew wasn't the only Malaysian who asserted dominance at the Megastrike Bowling Centre, Airport Mall, Berakas.

Former Asia No 1 Shalin Zulkifli rolled in second with a total of 1783 pins to pick up the $3,500 cash prize and Siti Safiya followed close behind in third with 1779 pins to take the $2,000.

Ak Aizat Pg Abu Samah was the top finisher for Brunei, toppling 1667 pins to finish in 6th place to win $700.

Megastrike also had a side category for the local bowlers that Ak Aizat topped to add another $500 to his winnings.

Pg Eshamuddin Pg Hj Mohiddin took second place with 1658 pins to his name to claim $400 followed by Shaikh Abdul Aziz Safwan with 1651 for $300.

Managing director of Megastrike, Major (R) Hjh Sharifah Hazlina Hj Syed Elham handed out the cash prizes and trophies to the top three winners.

Cash prizes were also awarded to the remaining top 20 as well as the top 10 local bowlers.

The tournament was organised by the Negara Brunei Darussalam Tenpin Bowling Congress and Megastrike Bowling Sdn Bhd.
