Two Bruneians will be leaving for Kuala Lumpur today to compete at the Petaling Jaya Squash Open.

Abang Muhammad Huzairie Abang Ali and Muhd Shavez Cheema will be competing in Division 2 and Division 3 respectively at the October 5-9 tournament and will depart from the Miri Airport in Miri, Sarawak, this morning.

Speaking to The Brunei Times yesterday, Muhd Shavez said that he is aiming to reach the second round of the tournament after being ousted in the first round in the previous edition of the tournament last year.

"This is my second time competing in the tournament and my target is to reach into the second round and see how it goes from there," said Muhd Shavez.

"This is a very big tournament and some of Malaysia's finest players will also be competing.

"It is not going to be easy, but I will give my all," he promised.

Abang Muhammad Huzairie is aiming slightly higher than his compatriot and said he is targeting a quarter-final finish.

"We have been practicing very hard for this tournament so I hope that it will help us," said Abang Muhammad Huzairie who completed a squash coaching course in Malaysia in June.

The duo have been training almost every day at the Universiti Brunei Darussalam's (UBD) Multipurpose Hall squash courts since June.

Other countries that will be participating in the tournament are Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong and Iran.

Abang Muhammad Huzairie won silver in the men's open category of the Sarawak Squash Circuit in Miri last month.

He lost 3-0 to compatriot Hj Mohd Sufri Hj Abdul Hamid in an-all Bruneian final at the Squash Academy in Pei Lin Middle School.

Muhd Shavez, meanwhile, finished sixth in the 16-player tournament.

Abang Muhammad Huzairie and Muhd Shavez are also members of local squash team Young Lions, which recently won the inaugural Brunei Squash League in May.

They finished the league with 135 points alongside team-mates Mohsin Khan and Muhd Kamaluddin AbuBakar.

Their senior team, Bru Lions, trailed them by five points to finish the competition with 130 points.
