Around 1,400 people took part in Temburong's first-ever celebration of the Olympic Day.

Organised annually by the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) in collaboration with the Department of Youth and Sports, the Olympic Day is celebrated to mark the revival of modern Olympics which took place on June 23, 1894, in Paris.

Various sports activities including kids athletics, hockey, bocce, tug-of-war, sepak takraw, futsal, netball, basketball and other traditional games were contested, with BDNOC president HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah presenting all the prizes to the winners.

HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah also competed in the VIP category of a five-a-side football competition, where his BDNOC team went down 3-0 to White Lion in the final.

Shahjohan Hj Sahri scored a brace and Sufri Tanjong also found the net as they helped White Lion to the win against BDNOC in the final.

YAM Pg Muda 'Abdul 'Aleem started for White Lion in the victory. White Lions defeated BMC 1-0 in the semi-finals while BDNOC beat NFABD with a similar score line in the other semi-final. BMC beat NFABD 3-0 in the third-place playoff.

Meanwhile in the open category, Persatuan Belia Belia Rataie (PBBR) FC were crowned champions after finishing on top of the four-team table with nine points.

PBBR defeated Kampong Sungai Sulok A 4-1 in their first match before thrashing Kampong Sungai Sulok B 6-0.

They then beat Kampong Sungai Sulok C 2-0 in their final match.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) won the competition last year after defeating White Lions 1-0 in the final in Tutong.

"To celebrate this year's Olympic Day is also indirectly celebrating Brunei Darussalam's participation at the most prestigious sports event, the 2012 London Olympic Games," stated HRH Prince Hj Sufri Bolkiah in the programme booklet.

"I am proud to say that the three promising athletes, namely swimmer Anderson Lim Chee Wei and Ak Hafiy Tajuddin Pg Rositi and Maziah Mahusin from athletics, have reached milestones by becoming the Olympians.

"Our nation also created history by sending a female athlete (Maziah) for the first time to the Olympiad," he added.

Also present yesterday were the Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah, the Minister of Communications Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar and the Minister of Industry and Primary Resources Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Utama Dato Seri Setia Hj Yahya Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar.
