In emphasising the importance of environmental preservation, particularly in combating plastic pollution, the King’s Baton was brought to Meragang Beach yesterday during a beach cleaning campaign, adding further excitement to the King’s Baton Relay event in Brunei Darussalam.

An initiative conducted also in conjunction with Plastic Cleanup Day, joining the campaign were Acting British High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Ken O’Flaherty; Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) Vice President Haji Mohd Zamri bin Dato Paduka Haji Hamdani, and a group of youth volunteers.

The King’s Baton Relay, held as part of the lead-up to the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, was organised by the BDNOC with the support of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS).

In his welcoming remarks, Haji Mohd Zamri expressed appreciation to the participants for their involvement in the beach cleanup, particularly in collecting plastic waste, with the aim of instilling environmental awareness among participants and the wider community. He also shared that the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games will officially commence in July and August 2026, with the King’s Baton Relay serving as one of the key celebratory activities leading up to the games.

Yesterday’s event continued with a warm-up session and a short safety briefing on the clean-up activities.

Through the collective effort of all participants and volunteers, 219.4 kilogrammes of plastic waste was collected, which included bottles, plastic cutlery, handbags and baby bottles.

An inspiring celebration of sport, culture, and environmental conservation, the King’s Baton Relay in Brunei Darussalam, reflects the nation’s commitment to Commonwealth values and its continuous efforts to engage youth, promote healthy lifestyles and protect the environment.

The King’s Baton itself was painted and decorated by local artist Abdul Ajihis bin Haji Terawih from the Language and Literature Bureau, Brunei Darussalam, showcasing the nation’s artistic heritage and cultural identity as part of the baton’s international journey. – Lyna Mohamad
