Over 350 participated in the King’s Baton Relay yesterday, walking 3.6 kilometres along the streets of the capital as part of the preparations for the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games.
Organised by the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the King’s Baton Relay began at the open area of Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Complex.
The event started with a group photo session of the participants, followed by a warm-up exercise and the flag-off of the relay by Minister of Development Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda bin Haji Abdul Rashid, in his capacity as Acting Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports.
Before the relay began, the acting minister received the King’s Baton from BDNOC Vice President Haji Mohd Zamri bin Dato Paduka Haji Hamdani. Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Muhammad Juanda led the relay by carrying the baton alongside the heads of missions of Commonwealth countries in Brunei Darussalam towards the Clock Tower Monument at Jalan Sultan, marking the handover point to the next relay group. The King’s Baton Relay in Brunei Darussalam celebrated sports, culture, and environmental preservation. It reflected the country’s commitment to Commonwealth values and its efforts to engage youth, promote a healthy lifestyle, and protect the environment.
The King’s Baton was painted and decorated by local artist Abdul Ajihis bin Haji Terawih, highlighting the nation’s artistic heritage and cultural identity as part of the baton’s international journey. The main event in Brunei Darussalam was the King’s Baton Relay, and following the relay, the baton will be taken to Meragang Beach today to commemorate Plastic Clean-Up Day. – James Kon
