Wushu star receives warm welcome home

Basma Lachkar, a Universiti Teknologi Brunei (UTB) student, returned home to a hero’s welcome after winning a gold medal in women’s taijiquan category of wushu in the 21st ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 held in Surabaya and Malang, Indonesia.

She scored a high of 9.486 in women’s taijiquan category as part of the Brunei Darussalam higher education institutions (HEIs) contingent for futsal and wushu and is the only gold medal recipient.

The HEI contingent comprised 55 individuals, including 32 athletes from HEIs and 23 officials, led by Senior Education Officer (Technical) at the Ministry of Education (MoE) Dr Tang Shi Siong.

The HEI contingent participated in eight sports events: athletics, futsal, 3×3 basketball, petanque, taekwondo, pencak silat, karate, and wushu.

Present at the Brunei International Airport to welcome the contingent’s arrival were Permanent Secretary (Higher Education) at the MoE Dr Haji Azman bin Ahmad and UTB Vice-Chancellor Datin Paduka Professor Dr Hajah Zohrah binti Haji Sulaiman. – James Kon
