National wushu star Basma Lachkar has achieved a milestone for Brunei Darussalam after winning her second gold medal in the 2024 University Wushu Championship in Harbin, China.

Basma Lachkar scored 9.490 in the women’s optional tianjiquan category to beat China’s Chen Yuxing by a margin score of 0.004. The Chinese athlete won silver with the score 9.486, while bronze went to Singapore’s Law Zhi Ning.

Basma’s previous gold medal was in the women’s optional taijijian event, won on the second day of competition. With the win, Basma made history as the first Brunei female athlete to win gold from two events.

Meanwhile, compatriot Hosea Wong bagged a bronze in the men’s optional tianjiquan event after scoring 9.466. The gold medal was won by Japan’s Naoki Nishiguchi, followed by China’s Zhao Shixuan.

In the men’s optional taijiquan on June 19, Wong won silver.

National wushu coach Li Hui said the campaign has been a success.

“Our wushu team, led by coach Zhao Chunjie, managed to collect two gold medals, one silver and one bronze medal. This is not easy as there were more than 400 athletes from 12 national teams who competed in the tournament,” he said, adding that they will strive for more success for the Sultanate. – JAMES KON
