The national Under-16 team fell to an 8-0 defeat to Malaysia in their second group H match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Under-16 Championship in Laos yesterday.
It was the first taste of defeat for Brunei new Under-16 coach Stephen Ng Heng Seng and the team after beating Guam 4-1 in their first match.
With the defeat Brunei now drop to second place with three points, while Malaysia now topped the group with four points.
Striker Muhammad Najmuddin Samat put Malaysia ahead early after finding the net only four minutes into the game at the National Sports Complex in Vientiane.
The Malaysians were 2-0 up in the 35th minute courtesy of an own goal by Muhd Ishyra Asmin Mohd Jabidi.
Midfielders Mohammad Shahrul and Kogi added the third and fourth scoring in the 40th and 44th minute respectively as Malaysia heading into the half-time break with a comfortable 4-0 lead.
Mohammad Shameirul would add Malaysia's fifth in the 65th minute, before Ashyraf Ahmad made it 6-0 eight minutes later.
Kogi added his second in the 85th minute and Najib Abdullah's goal in the 90th minute completed the rout.
According to AFC's official website, defender Nazirrudin Hj Ismail opened the scoring for Brunei in the 16th minute against Guam on Saturday.
Muhammad Syahmi then took over the goal-scoring responsibilities single-handedly, doubling Brunei's advantage in the 38th minute and added another four minutes later.
The forward then completed his hat-trick and sealed the win with the only goal of the second half, which came in the 73rd minute.
Brunei is one of 40 nations, divided into 10 groups, participating in the tournament which runs from Sept 21-29.
The Wasps have been placed in Group H together with Laos, Guam, South Korea and Malaysia in the 16th edition of the tournament.
They will play South Korea tomorrow at the National Sports Complex.
