Brunei Darussalam national swimmers Hayley Wong Ann Yue and Sharmeen binti Mohammad Mharvin achieved new personal bests in both the women’s 50-metre (m) freestyle events during the 7th Commonwealth Youth Games in Trinidad and Tobago on Wednesday.
Brunei leading female swimmer Hayley clocked a time of 28.29s, bettering her old record of 28.44s, while her national teammate Sharmeen posted a time of 29.51s, lowering her previous mark of 29.74s.
Hayley also finished second in her heat in Heat 4 ahead of competitors from Papua New Guinea, Sri Lanka, Gibraltar, Botswana, Nigeria, and Eswatini.
The national record for the women’s 50m freestyle event remains unbroken at 28.10s.
Both swimmers did not advance to the finals with Hayley and Sharmeen finishing 28th and 46th overall out of 58 entries.
England’s Skye Carter bagged the gold medal in the women’s 50m freestyle event with a new Junior Commonwealth Games Record of 25.15s, surpassing the previous mark of 25.19s attained by Australia’s Ami Matsuo in the Isle of Man in 2011.
Wales’ Taylor Theodora settled for silver with a time of 25.54s, while Australia’s Inez Miller claimed bronze with a time of 25.59s.
Meanwhile, the Brunei Darussalam swim team comprising Joel Ling Thai Yu, Zeke Chan Zhi Yue, Hayley Wong Ann Yue, and Sharmeen binti Mohammad Mharvin recorded a time of 4:27.53s in the mixed 4x100m medley relay event.
The national record for the mixed 4x100m medley relay event currently stands at 4:25.00s.
England struck the gold medal in the mixed 4x100m medley relay event after registering a time of 3:54.02s, while silver went to Scotland with a time of 3:58.03s and Australia taking bronze with a time of 3:59.12s. – Fadhil Yunus
