The national contingent involving athletes from pencak silat, badminton and aquatics arrived home to a warm welcome following their performances at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on Thursday night.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad welcomed the athletes home at the Brunei International Airport and presented sashes to the medal-winning athletes in pencak silat and badminton. Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud and Permanent Secretary (Community) at the MCYS Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari were also present.
The pencak silat team comprising Anisah Najihah binti Abdullah, Norleyermah binti Haji Raya and Nur Wasiqah Aziemah binti Rosihan scooped silver in the artistic women’s team event after collecting 9.925 points.
The national trio had also won silver together in the same event during the previous edition in Vietnam last year.
Meanwhile, the men’s team including Mohammad Hazim bin Ramliee, Muhammad Haziq Aqwa bin Md Iman Safwan and Md Ali Saifullah bin Haji Md Suhaimi snatched bronze in the artistic team event with 9.91 points.
The national badminton team moved to the semi-finals against Myanmar after receiving a bye in the previous round in the mixed team special event.
The national team fell to a 3-0 defeat after losing three games in the mixed doubles, men’s singles and women’s singles.
The result put Myanmar in the final leaving Brunei with an automatic bronze which they shared with Laos.
The special event featured five developing countries in the sport namely Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, Myanmar, Laos and Timor Leste.
