BRUNEI Darussalam national wushu exponent Muhd Sufi Shayiran bin Roslan climbed his way from sixth to fifth place in the Men’s Optional Nandao and Nangun finals with a combined score of 19.16 points in the 29th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Hall yesterday.

His younger brother Muhd Adi Salihin had been in medal contention position in fifth in the nangun but his score in the nandao dragged him to seventh place to finish with a combined score of 18.79 points.

Despite Muhd Adi Salihin not pushing through his score in the nangun event, the SEA Games debutant received a good acknowledgement from national head coach Li Hui.

“Salihin’s stamina and jumping ability have improved. Coaches in the wushu competition were also surprised with the improvements that Brunei have made,” Li Hui said of the young talent.

“The wushu athletes have improved tremendously in the individual events despite the loss.

“Salihin and Basma are first-timers in the SEA Games and have performed quite good.”

The national head coach is hopeful that today’s events of Nanquan and Taijiquan could harvest good results for the nation.

The other sibling, Mohd Adi Sya’rani bin Roslan, moved out of medal contention after managing a score of 9.27 points in the Men’s Optional Daoshu.

Mohd Adi Sya’rani finished in seventh place overall out of 11 competitors with a combined score of 18.77 points after taking into account the Optional Daoshu and Gunshu events, which is a distance from medal contention.

Needing to make an instant impression to the stone-faced judges, Mohd Adi Sya’rani was in deep trouble despite putting out a beautiful spin after coming out of the error-strewn horse stunt. In the middle of the routine, the national exponent produced a lovely series of jumps and tumbles and complemented it with a nice somersault.

Despite not being able to get to parallel in his jumps, Mohd Adi Sya’rani was able to demonstrate a great display of athleticism.

Singapore’s Jowen Lim Si Wei clinched the gold medal after registering a score of 9.69 points thanks to an action-packed routine. The gold medal success also meant that he has also pipped his compatriot Yong Xi Xiang who was no longer in bronze medal position with Malaysia’s Khaw Lim Jun securing bronze.

Meanwhile, Brunei’s wushu exponent Basma Lachkar and Ang Guat Lian finished seventh and eighth with a score of 9.23 points and 9.02 points, respectively in the Women’s Optional Taijijian.

Basma produced a well executed split in the early parts of her routine. Unfortunately, her positioning was not quite straight on her back leg and was slightly off balance in her landing midway through her routine.

Indonesia’s Lindswell Kwok followed her successes from 2011, 2013 and 2015 to defend her SEA Games title after posting a score of 9.68 points.
