Nur Haziq set new age group record at regional swim meet

BRUNEI Darussalam’s national junior swimmer Nur Haziq Samil set a new age group record for 14 to 15 year olds after clocking a time of 4:33.24s in the boys’ 400m freestyle in the 40th SEA Age Group Swimming Championships at the Assumption University in Bangkok, Thailand recently.

The national junior swimmer missed out on a podium finish but successfully surpassed Brunei’s Olympian Anderson Lim’s six-year record.

Nur Haziq also competed in the 200m freestyle where he registered a time of 2:08.65s and the 100m freestyle where he recorded a time of 57.30s.

The Bruneian also set his sights on breaking the national record in the boys’ 50m freestyle but fell short with a time of 26.22s.

Meanwhile, national junior swimmer Ashley Chai posted a time of 2:48.50s in the girls’ 200m backstroke which was won by Fatiha Sofie Kemala of Indonesia with a time of 2:23.76s.

Ashley, who performed in the Commonwealth Youth Games in Samoa last year, also competed in the 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:28.53s, 50m breaststroke with a time of 40.06s, 100m backstroke with a time of 1:17.10s and in the 200m breaststroke with a time of 3:15.32s.

Ashley also delivered a time of 30.59s in the 50m freestyle and 35.62s in the 50m backstroke during the final day of the championship.

Brunei’s junior swimmer Chua Yee Chen also made an appearance in the boys’ 100m breaststroke where he recorded a time of 1:19.38s and in the 200m breaststroke where he clocked a time of 2:55.65s.

Brunei Darussalam ended the three-day competition without accumulating a single medal together with Cambodia and Myanmar. Vietnam topped the medal tally table after a haul of 39 gold, 39 silver and 27 bronze followed by Indonesia with a total of 24 gold, 17 silver and 12 bronze and Singapore with 18 gold, 15 silver and 21 bronze.
