IT WAS a good start for Brunei at the 18th Malaysian Games (SUKMA) yesterday after the Hijium siblings delivered two taekwondo bronze medals.
Hyde Nachman Hijium claimed the first bronze in the men’s poomsae individual event after scoring 7.04 points at the Stadium Perpaduan, Petrajaya in Kuching. Sarawak’s Yong Jin Kun finished at the top of the podium with 7.69 points followed by Selangor’s Brian Yam Ju Sheng with 7.12 points.
Hyde’s sister Hyde Nathania Hijium also got on the podium in the women’s poomsae individual after notching 7.11 points to claim bronze. Sarawak’s Marlylyne Bungan Lain bagged gold with her score of 7.38 points while Choi Thong Ern of Johor placed second with 7.17 points.
The Bruneian siblings also teamed up for the mix pair event and narrowly missed out on another bronze medal. They managed 6.96 points and were tied with Lay Yi Chong and Cheong Pui Kei of Negeri Sembilan for the joint bronze — though the latter took the medal afer scoring better for the taegeuk 8, according to Malaysian news agencyBernama. The pair of Augustine Rudy Grocer and Nurul Hidayah Abdul Karim collected a total of 7.37 points to beat seven other teams to win the first gold medal of the Games.
Selangor’s Pek Chew Wen and Brian Yam Ju Sheng were second best on 7.16 points while Chua Jia Xuan and Clara Tan Xin Yu of Johor managed 7.11 points to grab the joint bronze with Lay and Cheong.
Bruneian Muhd Ameerul Solehen Mohd Kasim takes to the venue in the welterweight (over 74kg and not exceeding 80kg) event today.
