His Royal Highness Prince 'Abdul Muntaqim delivered another strong performance at the 2nd Brunei Interclub swimming competition after finishing first in the 50m backstroke at the National Stadium Swimming Pool in Berakas yesterday.
"Overall, HRH has won first place twice, second and third places once. and he is now a strong contender for the most valuable swimmer in his age category (7-year-old age group)," said Sue Mead, a member of the competition's organising committee, in an interview with The Brunei Times last night. Competing under the banner of ISB Hammerheads, HRH came in first in the 100m freestyle on Friday.
The prince also finished second in his 50m butterfly, and third in his 50m breaststroke events. HRH is registered to compete in all five events available for the 7-year-old age group - 50m breaststroke, backstroke, butterfly and freestyle as well as the 100m freestyle race. "The prince will compete in the 50m freestyle and team relay event tomorrow (today)," continued Mead.
The swimmers will not be awarded medals in the competition but they will be earning points for their clubs. The club with the most points will be awarded the trophy and prize pack, while the prize pack will also be awarded to the first and second runner up clubs. The male and female swimmers within each age group who have won the most points for their club will win 'The Most Valuable Swimmer' medals.
Almost 100 swimmers from six Brunei clubs: Brunei Speed Club, Dolphin Swimming Club, ISB Hammerheads, Jerudong Swimming Club, Tutong Swimming Training Scheme and MICIA are vying for top honours at the June 14-16 tournament. "We are really pleased with the club spirits shown by the swimmers, especially considering that there are no individual prizes on offer but only overall best club prizes," said Mead.
Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) were the champions of the previous edition of the tournament, but they are not participating this year.
