"The Borneo Track and Field Championship was a historic sporting event where Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak would compete against each other annually and it was last held in the 1980s," BAA president and chairperson of the meeting, Zulkifli Hj Jaafar, told The Brunei Times. "We're starting it up again because we want to help develop our current athletes' growth (and to help our) athletes train and prepare themselves for the 2019 Brunei SEA Games.
"For all parties involved, it will be a historic event as we're reviving what used to be a prestigious championship that was inspired by the aspirations of our past leaders and rulers," he said. "We haven't decided on the age groups yet but once it is decided, we will hold trials and tryouts for anybody interested to join and represent Brunei.
"The trials and tryouts will most probably be held during late August or early September."
