Thursday, May 29, 2014

Five squash players will be representing Brunei at next month's Sarawak Squash Circuit in Miri, Sarawak.

Abang Muhammad Huzairie Abang Ali, Muhd Shavez Cheema, Mohd Kamaluddin Abu Bakar, Mohsin Khan and Mohd Saiful Rizal will be flying the Sultanate's flag at the June 20 to 22 tournament. However, last year's champion Hj Mohd Sufri Hj Abdul Hamid will not be defending his title in the men's open category.

"Hj Mohd Sufri will not be around this time as he has got other commitments, but we still have quite a strong team for the tournament," said Abang Muhammad Huzairie in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

Hj Mohd Sufri defeated compatriot Abang Muhammad Huzairie 3-0 in an-all Bruneian final at the Squash Academy in Pei Min Middle School, Miri in September last year. Another player representing Brunei in the tournament last year, Vincent Lawrence, will also be absent this time around.

Vincent did well after managing to reach the semi-final before losing to Abang Muhammad Huzairie. Mohd Kamaluddin ended the tournament fifth while Muhd Shavez finished sixth out of 16 contestants. "We have been training since last week and as usual we will always give our best," promised Abang Muhammad Huzairi.

"We will focus on one game at a time and we will see how it goes from there," he added.

Abang Muhammad Huzairie and Hj Mohd Sufri recently competed at the Kijono Cup Open Squash Championship 2014 in Jakarta, Indonesia, where the duo made Brunei proud after reaching the quarter-finals of the May 15-17 tournament at the Gelora Bung Karno Squash Complex.

"We've got to keep playing to keep our form and fitness going," continued Abang Huzairie. "The next edition of the Brunei Squash League will only be held after the Hari Raya celebration, so we must take our own initiatives to compete elsewhere," he added.

The 2nd Brunei Squash League which concluded in March saw the Hawks crowned champions after recording 119 points.

National Stadium Team notched 98 points to finish second and the Jerudong International School (JIS) Bulls were third with 91 points in the tournament at the Squash Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

Institute of Higher Learning (IPT) Lions finished fourth in the league after recording 88 points in the five-team league table while the Army Team were last with 67 points.
