Table tennis enthusiasts in the Sultanate are invited to join the 2014 Table Tennis Team Tournament next month.
The tournament which is organised by Acutan Spin Bersatu and supported by the Brunei Amateur Table Tennis Association (BATTA) will be held at the Menglait Sports Complex in Gadong from June 9 to 15. The tournament is divided into Division 1 and Division 2 - Division 1 is a team event for the invitational teams while Division 2 is a team event for local teams.
The competition will be played according to International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rules and all events will be contested in a round-robin, best-of-five and knock-out format. Entry fees is set at $100 for Division 1 and $50 for Division 2.
Forms can be obtained by contacting Pg Muhd Sufian Pg Hj Ibrahim (8820824), Muhammad Mujib (7148917) and Wee Tzu Min (8661987).
Completed forms are to be returned to them not later than 4.30pm on June 4.
The winner of the Division 1 will bring home the championship trophy and cash prize of $500. The second-placed team will walk away with a trophy and a cash prize of $250 and the third-placed team will win a trophy and a cash prize of $125.
Meanwhile, the top three teams in Division 2 will receive trophies. The tournament will be officiated by umpires and officials from BATTA. "We will be sending our new umpires and official to help out at the tournament," said BATTA Secretary General Anthony Liew told The Brunei Times yesterday.
"This will be a very good experience for the new umpires and referees as they also will take part in the Southeast Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship which will kick off on June 16," he added.
BATTA held the ITTF and Asia Table Tennis Union (ATTU) Tournament Organisation Course in March to prepare the country in hosting the Southeast Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship, which Brunei first hosted in 2005.
"We hosted the Southeast Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship back in 2005 and we had some difficulties in organising it, so we hope this course will help us to plan effectively," said Liew in a previous story in The Brunei Times, adding that the course will cover "everything that we need to know to prepare for a table tennis tournament."
BATTA also assisted the Department of Co-Curriculum Education in organising the Table Tennis Basic Umpiring Coach for Teachers and Staffs in the Primary and Secondary Schools the same month.
