It was a much lighter affair on the second day of the 22nd Brunei Age Group Swimming Championships.
One open and two age group records were set yesterday at the Aquatics Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Tiara Shahril Anwar of Jerudong Swimming Club (JSC) broke her third national open record in the competition with the girls' Group 1 (16-18 years old) 400-metre freestyle yesterday.
She clocked a time of 4:48.14 to beat her previous national open and age group records of 4:50.33 which she set back in November last year.
The national swimmer had set a new open and age group record in the 1500m freestyle event on the first day with a time of 19:05.55.
It was also confirmed yesterday that the 800m split times from the 1500m freestyle events on Friday are new records as well.
Tiara's time of 10.08.66 beat the previous open record of 10:14.39 by Amanda Liew from June 2010.
The time also bettered the age group record of 10:15.25 set by herself in November last year.
Nur Haziq Samil of Micia Swimming Team, who managed a time of 10:00.64 in boys' Group 3 (12-13 years old) notched the new age group record as there were no previous records on file.
The other record on the second day came courtesy of Ashley Chai of Royal Brunei Recreation Club (RBRC) girls' Group 3 50m backstroke event.
She completed her swim with a time of 34.06 seconds which better her previous time of 34.53s from June last year.
National aquatics coach Eric Landa felt that there could more records should have fallen but is hoping for better results on the final day.
"Today was a very hot day at the pool with again a lot of swimmers participating. It was also a day with many 'almost' records. Sometimes by up to 0.1 seconds," said Landa.
"But as we all know, almost doesn't count. Better luck next time," he added.
"While Tiara is continuing her good form in the pool, it is great to see Ashley back in record breaking form in the 50m backstroke today.
"Hopefully more records to follow tomorrow (Sunday) morning and afternoon on the last day of the competition," said the Dutchman.
Landa had previously shared that the three-day competition will be used as a qualifier for the June 6-8 SEA Age Group Swimming Championship and the June 17-22 SEA Swimming Federation Championship, both to be held in Singapore.
The final day continues today at 9am.
