Mohd Adenin Bolhan and Nurhidayatullah Johari (pic) have been selected to represent Brunei at the May 24-June 4 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) in Perlis.
Adenin will be representing the Sultanate in discus while Nurhidayatullah will be running the 100m and 200m.
The two are no new faces to regional competition and have racked up medals during previous outings for the national team at the Borneo Games, Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Friendship Games and Southeast Asian (SEA) Youth Athletics Championships.
Adenin was happy he was picked to represent Brunei and promised to do his best.
"Right now I am on form and I'm targeting to get a medal and beat my personal best," Adenin told The Brunei Times during an interview yesterday.
Adenin's personal best is the 37.01m he set during last November's 3rd Brunei Darussalam Track and Field Open Championship.
National coach Fidel Gallenero said that discus is Adenin's main event and he has steadily improved under the Filipino's tutelage.
"Adenin has been training with me for two years now, and from the 24m he was able to throw when he first started, he has been able to record a personal best of 37.01m," said Gallenero.
"His number one focus is discus and his secondary event is the shot putt - but he's not very strong in it," said Gallenero, adding that Adenin has improved from 9m to 12m in shot putt.
Nurhidayatullah's coach, meanwhile, is confident his athlete will perform well at SUKMA.
"My prediction is maybe she will reach the last eight in the 200m and place in the top-five in the 100m," said Hj Shahron Hj Shamsudin.
"We concentrate on the 100m because it's her specialty," added Hj Shahron.
Adenin won two silver medals in the discus and shot putt events at last September's 3rd Borneo Games in Labuan and also secured gold in discuss and bronze in shot putt at the 2012 BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games.
Nurhidayatullah, on the other hand, picked up two gold medals at the BIMP-EAGA Friendship Games after clocking in at 13.25s in the 100m. She also set her personal best of 26.04 in the 200m at the same event.
Her personal best for the 100m was the 12.42s she set at last June's 8th SEA Youth Athletics Championships in Vietnam.-Syarif Rasani
