Mohd Sufi Shayiran Roslan got a relatively good start at the 5th World Junior Wushu Championships in Antalya, Turkey.
He finished eighth out of 15 competitors in the nangun (southern staff) event after tallying 9.00 points yesterday.
The winner of the event scored 9.68 points at the Kepez Belediyesi Kapali Spor Salonu.
The 15-year-old had previously said that he was aiming for a top-10 finish but yesterday said he was not satisfied with the results.
"Eventhough my target is to finish in the top 10, I am still not really satisfied with my performance," said Sufi in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.
"There were some deductions made by me. This is due to the lack of training in Brunei due to school and exams," he said.
"I'm upset because I think I could manage a top-six finish. But I will try my best again in the remaining events," he continued.
A sixth-place finish or better will see Sufi qualify for the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing from August 16-28.
Sufi is also set to participate in the nanquan (southern fist) event.
Younger brother Mohd Adi Sya'rani is the only other Bruneian at the competition and will see action in changquan (long fist) event today.
Daoshu (single-edged swordplay) and gunshu (long staff) are the other two events he will compete in.
The duo will also team up for the duilian (duo sparring with broadsword and spear) event, where they managed a silver medal during the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang, Indonesia, at the end of September.
