Brothers Mohd Sufi Shayiran and Mohd Adi Sya'rani Roslan will shoulder the load for Brunei at the 5th World Junior Wushu Championships in Antalya, Turkey from March 11-18.

The tournament serves as a qualifier for the 2nd Summer Youth Olympic Games in Nanjing from August 16-28, where a sixth-place finish or better will book the brothers a ticket to China.

Sufi will take part in the nanquan (southern fist) and nangun (southern staff) events while Adi will see action in changquan (long fist), daoshu (single-edged swordplay) and gunshu (long staff).

They will also team up for the duilian (duo sparring with broadsword and spear) event, where they managed a silver medal at the 3rd Islamic Solidarity Games in Palembang, Indonesia, at the end of September.

Having to balance training with their studies, the duo know they can't expect too much at Turkey.

"My expectations are not really high... maybe at least a top-10 finish," said Sufi in an interview with The Brunei Times yesterday.

"Preparations for the tournament have been short due to school and exams and I'm not exactly very confident, but we will just do our best," added the 15-year-old.

Younger brother Adi will have exams after returning from Turkey but is hoping to qualify for the duilian event.

"My expectation is to finish in the top-10 (for individual events). InsyAllah," said younger brother Adi.

"We have been busy with school and even after the tournament, I'll have to sit for exams.

"But hopefully we will be able to finish in the top-six for the duilian event," added the 14-year-old.

National wushu coach Li Hui agrees it will be a tough assignment but he is looking to take the best out of the world junior competition.

"It is going to be tough because studies are very important and it is Sufi's O-Level year (Form 5)," said the coach.

"They have been working hard and even sacrificed their Sundays to train.

"We are not getting the amount of training that we want and we cannot compare our results from last year," he added.

"It doesn't matter which event we are competing in but there will be a dip if we don't get enough training.

"Regardless, we will go out and do our best like always," continued the Chinese national.

The team will depart the Sultanate on Sunday.

The last outing by the national junior wushu squad was the Miri Sarawak 2013 Wushu Invited Championships in the final week of 2013, where they returned with 10 gold, five silver and six bronze medals.

It was the first taste of competition at the regional level for the majority of the 18-member squad , all of whom were between six and 15-years-old.
