Bruneians face uphill battle
Monday, December 9, 2013

Lee Yingshi's sixth place finish was the best Brunei could muster at yesterday's SEA Games wushu competition in a decidedly poor day at the office for the team.

The national wushu exponent produced a score of 9.47 points in the nine-athlete women's changquan (long fist) discipline, with Vietnam's Thi Phuong Giang Hoang taking gold with 9.68, Singapore's Tan Yan Ni silver with 9.60 and Indonesia's Thalia Lovita Sosrodjojo bronze with 9.59.

Competing in the men's nanquan (southern fist), Md Sufi Shariyan Roslan's 9.51 put him 10th out of the 11 contestants.

Myanmar's Wai Phyo Aung won the event on 9.70, followed by Malaysia's Hua Ho Mun (9.68) and Myanmar's Soe Kyaw (9.67).

Md Sufi's brother Md Adi Sya'rani fared no better in the men's gunshu (long staff), registering 8.95 to finish ninth out of the 10 exponents. Indonesian Achmad Hulaefi (9.70), Malaysian Ng Say Yoke (9.68) and Myanmar's Aung Si Thu (9.67) took the top three podium finishes.

Ang Guat Lian propped up the eight-athlete women's taijiquan (Taiji fist) table after returning with a score of 8.59 yesterday.

Indonesia's Lindswell took gold on 9.71, with Malaysia's Ng Shin Yii claiming silver on 9.69 and Vietnam's Thi Minh Huyen Tran bronze with 9.66.

Today will mark the third day of action for the wushu team at the Wunna Theikdi Indoor Stadium, and despite the hopes placed on the team to deliver as is their norm in regional meets, no medals have materialised thus far.

The Roslan brothers have a shot at changing all that today when Md Sufi takes to the arena for the men's nandao (southern sabre) and Mohammad Adi Sya'rani the men's daoshu (sabre).

Sufi, who won bronze in the nangun (southern cudgel) event during August's 7th Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Manila, will compete in the same discipline on Tuesday.

All eyes, though, will be on Lee and Faustina Woo Wai Sii, the two-time SEA Games silver medalists in the women's duilian (duo sparring) who will be praying that the third time will be the charm.
