Indonesian duo upsets top seeds for doubles title
Sunday, December 8, 2013

Second seeds Achmadi Prayoga and Hutauruk Tio Juliandi of Indonesia took the boy's doubles title in the 48th Brunei International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit yesterday.

The duo defeated third seeds and fellow countrymen Anthony Susanto and Christian Alvin Edison 6-2, 6-4 in the final.

Juliandi told The Brunei Times, "It was a very hard match for us today especially since it was the final."

"I felt my partner and I played really well today and we both enjoyed it even though we were slightly nervous.

"We didn't even expect to reach this far from the start and this is the first time we won gold in the doubles together," said Juliandi.

No 1 seed Anthony also stumbled in the singles, losing 6-3, 6-1 in his semi-final against compatriot Bryan Husin.

Anthony's coach Elbert Sie felt that his performance wasn't up to his usual standards today at the National Tennis Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

"Anthony didn't play so well today and he didn't believe he could win the match because the other guy played well in the first set," said Sie.

"Husin played a good first set and wouldn't miss his shots.

"Anthony also feels a bit scared when he plays against opponents younger than him so he had that pressure, which led to him thinking too much.

"Losing his singles match also affected him during the boy's doubles final," added Sie.

No 1 seeds for the girl's doubles, Miyo Kobayashi from Japan and Damarsari Arrum from Indonesia finished first after dominating Saya Usai and Yuri Katano of Japan 6-3, 6-0.

It will be an all Indonesian boy's singles final with fourth seed Bryan Husin taking on sixth seed Hendrawan Susanto on the center court at 9am today.

Hendrawan moved into the final after defeating Philippines' unseeded Joachim Samson 6-2, 6-2.

The girl's single final will be between Usai and Arrum at the same time over at court two.

No 6 seed Usai sealed her spot after knocking out No 1 seed Kobayashi 6-2, 6-1, while fifth seed Arrum took out No 2 seed Chinese Taipei's Han-Chi Chen 6-1, 6-1.-Syarif Rasani
