The Philippines smashed Brunei's hopes at the 48th Brunei International Tennis Federation (ITF) Junior Circuit after sending Nurul Mohd Andi Hambali and Law Vi Chen out of the competition yesterday.
Nurul Mohd Andi was eliminated in the first round 7-5, 6-1 by Jerome Romualdez while Law suffered a 6-0, 6-0 thrashing at the hands of Joachim Samson at the National Tennis Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.
Law fell to Samson twice after a 3-6, 6-3, 10-5 defeat during the boy's doubles when he paired with Korea's Yohan Sung and Samson paired with American Jack Pulliam.
Nurul Mohd Andi and Law both played in the 47th edition in March but also failed to progress past the first round.
Nurul Mohd Andi fell 6-0, 6-0 to Indonesia's Yoga Argi Syahputra while Law went down by the same score to the Philippines' Marcen Angelo Gonzales.
Jefri Schmidt was the country's best performer at the last edition after picking up a point in his 6-0, 6-1 loss to 11th seed Kenta Kurita of Japan at the March 12-17 competition.
Brunei's Melanie Lau Shu Ping put on a better show in March when she made it to the second round before being taken out 6-1, 6-1 by Singapore's Wee Khee Yen.
The previous edition saw Sri Lanka's Sharmal Dissanayake lift the boy's singles title after he took out Lo Chien Hsun of Chinese-Taipei 6-4, 6-3.
Over in the girls singles final, Hong Kong's Claire Yoonkee Choi Spackman triumphed 6-1, 6-4 over Myanmar's Nilar Win.
The boy's doubles team of Kazakhstan's Sagadat Ayap and Indonesia's Armando Soemarno finished off Hong Kong's Chun Hei Lam and Hong Kit Jack Wong 7-5, 6-1 in March's final.
Claire also moved into the final of the girl's doubles when she paired with fellow national Ka Man Carina to then lose 6-3, 6-2 to Singapore's Doshi Rheeya and Japan's Miyo Kobayashi.
None of the 47th Circuit finalist came back to Brunei defend their titles.
