The ASEAN Youth Sports Camp came to a close last night with many of its participants expressing delight in having take part in it.
Fifty five participants between the ages of 16-21 had the chance to learn and train in athletics, netball, swimming or golf camps.
Pathana Inthavong who flew all the way from Laos said the camp has helped him gain more knowledge in a multitude of sporting elements.
"I have gained more experience (regarding) doping control, how we train and motivation," Inthavong told The Brunei Times during the farewell dinner at the Seasons Restaurant, Centrepoint Hotel in Gadong.
"It was very enjoyable being a part of the camp and I would like to join it again. "Thank you for inviting our country to participate," he said.
"The most useful thing for me during the stay was the work out activities during our swimming sessions," he added.
Inthavong was part of a delegation of three from Laos. The remaining participants came from Brunei (21), Cambodia (three), Indonesia (five), Malaysia (two), Philippines (four), Singapore (five), Thailand (six) and Vietnam (five).
"I think I did learn a lot especially on how we came together from different backgrounds and countries to learn from each other," said Brandon Boon from the Singapore Sports School.
"Getting to know each other and learning about each other's cultures and backgrounds, as well as being able to bond, is basically what I have gained from this trip.
"If I had the chance to come to this camp again I would," added Boon.
Participants were also involved in cultural activities during the five days.
Acting Director of the Youth and Sports Department Hj Abdul Malik Hj Mohammad believed the ASEAN Youth Sports Camp had given the participants an opportunity to not only interact and learn about sports but also to enjoy and make new friends.
"Our objectives to develop the physical body and mind of our youth, as well as good sportsmanship and solidarity among the young ASEAN people have been achieved," he said.
"As a member of the ASEAN countries, we are fully commited to any of the ASEAN related development programmes in enhancing the capacity of our youth through sports towards realising the ASEAN community by 2015, a community that is people centred and socially responsible," he added.
Guest of honour, Permanent Secretary of MCYS Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid Hj Mohd Jaafar presented the top three teams of youths who took part in the Brunei Amazing Race challenge with their trophies.
Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Hamid also presented all the head of delagates with certificates.
