The Sports School Council's Under-16 team left for Malaysia yesterday to compete in the Bukit Jalil Sports Schools International U16 Netball Tournament in Kuala Lumpur.
Acting Director of the Co-curriculum Department under the Ministry of Education, Pg Suhaimi Pg Hj Abu Bakar was present at the Brunei International Airport to present the national flag to team manager Rosni Hj Yahya.
This will be the girls' first ever taste of an international level tournament and Rosni hopes that they will be able to compete against the other Under-16 teams at the Nov-ember 19-22 tournament.
Rosni has been continuously training the players for many years to help prepare them for future upcoming games - be it local or international.
They have also put themselves through the hard work needed to prepare themselves for the 7th ASEAN School Games in 2015, which Brunei will be hosting.
"I have developed all these girls from the grassroots. It's different competing at this level compared to taking part in local competitions," said Rosni.
"It is important to start them from such a young age because it's not something you can do in just three months.
"Only one of the girls are 16 and the rest are either 15, 14 or 13," added Rosni.
The Sports School Council team is made up of students from the Under-16 team, which is made up of students from Chung Hwa Middle School, Jerudong International School, Sekolah Tinggi Perempuan Raja Isteri, Sultan Hassan Secondary School Temburong, Masin Secondary School and Menglait Secondary School.
Brunei have been put in Group B alongside Helpmekaar College (South Africa), Singapore Sports School and Governor Stirling Senior High (Australia).
Over in Group A are Bukit Jalil Sports School, Hong Kong Academy, Raffles Girls School (Singapore) and Marais Viljoen High School (South African).
Brunei will be taking on Helpmekaar College at 10.30am today followed by a second match against Governor Stirling Senior High at 6pm at the Bukit Jalil Sports School. Their final group match against Singapore Sports School will be tomorrow at 10.30am.
