Brunei finished in the top 10 of the Asian Cities Chess Team Championship (Dubai Cup), an achievement which the national coach touted as a "first in Brunei chess history".
The Sultanate sent the foursome of Siti Nur Fatimah Al-Zuhra Hj Azahari, Pg Kamarunsalehin Pg Kamis, Md Aliuddin Hj Azahari and Amir Fakhry Hj Sulaiman to compete in the 18-team, nine-round competition in Tagaytay City, Philippines.
The team won four matches - beating opponents from Kuwait, Chinese Taipei, Sri Lanka and Dubai - and lost five.
The Philippines team of Grand Master Oliver Barbosa, GM Mark Paragua, GM John Paul Gomez and GM Darwin Laylo eventually won the tournament.
Brunei National Chess Coach Tahir Vakhidov, a grand master himself, noted the team's achievement was made despite the absence of the Sultanate's top player.
"We are happy that without Brunei top player FM (FIDE Master) Yee Soon Wei, the team managed to finish in top 10 of this competition," Vakhidov said.
"It is first time in Brunei chess history the team managed such achievement," he told The Brunei Times.
