Wednesday, October 23, 2013

The second edition of the Brunei Squash League kicked-off with a bang last night with two matches contested at the Squash Centre of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex in Berakas.

The opening match of the tournament saw the National Stadium team defeat Jerudong International School (JIS) Bulls 3-2 in a very close match while The Hawks fell to a 3-1 defeat to the Institute of Higher Learning (IPT) in the later match.

This second edition saw an increase of participation of female players, with each teams competing in the tournament required to at least having one female athlete in their team.

"This second edition of the tournament will be a very tough and competitive for all of the teams competing as all teams look very well balanced with their players," said IPT's Muhd Shavez Cheema, who is also the organiser of the tournament.

"We are also happy to see an increase of participation from the women in the tournament.

"This is very good for us and I hope that through this we will be able to raise the standard of squash in Brunei.

"This tournament is sanctioned by the Brunei Squash Racquet Association under the Department of Youth and Sports, but it is privately funded by us, the players and friends.

"So any form of support from the public and relevant authorities will be most welcome," added Muhd Shavez who used to play for Young Lions in the inaugural tournament which kicked off in March.

Young Lions' Mohsin Khan, Muhd Kamaluddin Abu Bakar, Muhd Shavez and Abang Huzairi Abang Ali defeated Vincent Lawrence, Catherine Carter, Chris Kruger and Phil Lowther of Jerudong International School (JIS) Tigers 3-1 in their last league game to emerge as champions with 135 points.
