More futsal refs needed
Monday, October 14, 2013

Brunei is on the lookout for more futsal referees as the sport is experiencing "drastic" growth and is in need of more officials.

Speaking to The Brunei Times yesterday, the secretary of the relatively new Futsal Referees Association said that there were only 15 "active" referees in the country listed with the association, including two who were certified by world football governing body FIFA.

"Futsal is growing drastically in Brunei and there are now so many tournaments, especially on the weekends," said Hj Dasnan Hj Abd Rahman.

"It can't just be us same referees all the time. We need more people," he stressed.

To increase the number of futsal officials available, the Futsal Referees Association which is a unit under the larger Football Referees Association will be offering basic courses for futsal refereeing next month.

The National Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (NFABD) will also be involved in providing for the course.

The course will cost $30 per individual and has been planned for mid-November, on Sundays and Mondays, for three weeks or six classes.

It was hoped that the course will produce capable referees to prepare for competitions such as the National Futsal League, which Hj Dasnan said would take place early 2014.

Those interested in participating in the course can seek further information and registration forms from the NFABD building near Commonwealth Drive, or by contacting 7205349, 8818316, 8899455, 8761648 and 8761264.

The closing date to return the forms is October 30.

The course is open to men above the age of 18 who are Brunei citizens or permanent residents, said a statement from the Futsal Referees Association.
