Brunei nets big medal haul

It was a good day for the Brunei contingent at the 3rd Borneo Games in Labuan yesterday.

They had their biggest haul of the Sept 13-22 tournament after adding four gold, six silver and 11 bronze medals.

It brings the Sultanate's total tally to six gold, nine silver and 13 bronze medals heading into the penultimate day of the competition.

The Gasing team provided two of those gold medals after they won the men's doubles after defeating Labuan 4-1 while the other was from the youth doubles after beating Sabah 8-5.

They also managed two silver medals from both the men and youth singles categories after losing their finals.

The sepak takraw team struck gold after beating Sabah 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 15-7) in the final of the Regu event.

They had beaten Labuan A 3-0 (16-14, 15-11, 15-7) to advance to the final.

It was a good day for athletics after they bagged one gold, three silver and four bronze medals.

The gold medal was courtesy of Md Fakhri Ismail after he won the men's 200m event with a time of 22.23s.

Two of the silver medals came through Md Adenin Bolhan in the men's discus and shot putt events. Maziah Mahusin (pic) won the other silver medal from the women's 200m event and also finished on the podium of the 400m with a bronze.

Md Khairul Anwar (men's 5000m), Abd Rahim Abdullah (men's 200m) and the women's 4 x 100m relay team bagged the other three bronze medals for the Sultanate.

The lawn bowls team bagged one silver and three bronze medals.

The silver medal came from the men's triples after losing 20-14 to Labuan.

The bronze medals were from the men's singles, pairs and fours.

Siti Noradiyatul Amal, Ak Md Saiful Azwan and Mohamad Helmi Zaini each got a bronze medal for the silat team after losing in their respective semi-finals.

Over in the football event, Brunei and Labuan shared the spoils after the match ended 1-1 at the Dataran Labuan field.

The Sultanate will face Sarawak today at the same venue at 4pm.

The futsal team had to settle for a draw and a loss yesterday after winning their first two games on Wednesday.

They drew 4-4 against Sabah in their first matchup before losing 7-4 to East Kalimantan in their second game.

Over in swimming, Amnahliyani Husain finished third in the 50m backstroke event after coming in with a time of 35.28 seconds. The Sultanate has sent a 138-member contingent to the multi-sport event. They are competing in 11 sports athletics, sepak takraw, swimming, pencak silat, karate-do, football, futsal, lawn bowl, top spinning, basketball and tug-of-war in this year's edition of the tournament.
