The national sepak takraw team struck silver in the doubles event at the 5th Borneo Games in Labuan yesterday.

They beat East Kalimantan 3-1 (15-10, 15-11, 6-15, 15-10) in the semi-finals to move into the final, where Sabah proved too strong for the Bruneians after they won 3-1 (8-15, 15-10, 9-15, 13-15) to capture the gold at the Under-21 regional meet.

The additional medal brings the tally to two gold, three silver and two bronze medals with the rest all coming from the karate events.

The sepak takraw team will also begin their campaign in the regu event today.

They will go up against South Kalimantan in their opener at 9.30am before taking on Labuan B at 2.30pm.

The football team started out their campaign on the right note after beating Sabah 1-0 at Stadium Labuan.

They will take on East Kalimantan at the Matrikulasi today at 8am.

Meawhile, the Under-21 basketball team finished the competition winless after losing 71-55 to East Kalimantan yesterday.

They started out with a 75-59 loss to Labuan on Sunday before falling to a 83-52 defeat at the hands of Sabah on Monday.

The Sultanate has sent a 138-member contingent to the Sept 13-22 multi-sport event.

They are competitng in 11 sports athletics, sepak takraw, swimming, pencak silat, karate-do, football, futsal, lawn bowl, top spinning, basketball and tug-of-war in this year's edition of the tournament.

Mohammad Hamizan Sanif delivered the country's first gold on Saturday after defeating Mohd Zairam Zainal from Sabah in the 75kg and below kumite even.

The second gold was courtesy of Mohammad Mairul after he defeated Vinnidick Wilson Charlie from Sarawak in men's 67kg and below kumite final on Sunday.

The last edition of the Games in 2011 saw Brunei finish fourth after winning eight gold, six silver and five bronze medals.
