The national swim team returned to Brunei from the World Championships in Barcelona yesterday.

Although not all of them achieved their goals, they know what went wrong and how they can improve for future tournaments.

Tiara Shahril Anwar and Muhammad Isa Ahmad were the only two of the four that managed to succeed at the competition.

In the 50m freestyle, Tiara set a new personal best of 28.74s to beat her previous best of 29.24s.

Amanda Liew still holds the national record with a time of 28.23s that was set at the 2009 World Championships in Rome.

Tiara also beat her personal best in the 100m freestyle after clocking in at 1.02.88, 0.34 seconds short of the national record done in 2010 by Liew.

Muhammad Isa set a new national and age group record for the 50m breaststroke after timing in 31.29s, breaking the previous 31.58s he set in April.

"It feels really good to know I did well because this was my first international tournament for me," she said yesterday.

"It was a good experience to see how everyone there swims and to learn from them.

"I think everyone handled themselves very well and it's definitely a learning experience to show us we need to work hard to move up to the next level.

"Singapore was a good session but if it went on longer we all could have improved that much more," added Tiara of their July 8-23 training stint in Singapore.

Muhammad Isa's older sister Nur Hamizah was unable to break both her national records in the women's 100m and 50m backstroke that she set in June.

Nur Hamizah timed in at 1.13.25 in the women's 100m and 33.85s in the 50m.

Christian Nikles was close to smashing his own national record in the 100m freestyle but unfortunately came in at 55.55s - which equaled the record.

Nikles admitted that he failed to perform in the 50m freestyle where he clocked in at 25.52s, 0.43 seconds short the national record he set on June 5th at the ASEAN School Games in Vietnam.

"I messed up in the 50m freestyle from the start coming out a second slow, so because of that it got in the way of my whole performance," said Nikles.

"I expected a lot more but it is what it is and now I know what I need to do, and that's to train more.

"There won't be much competition for a while so there will be a big training block again.

"I will be taking a week break though because it was really tiring.

"I felt that the training camp in Singapore was a week to short.

"If it was three or four weeks, we all could have done much better overall. One of the small things we could have spent more time on as well were our dives.

"The diving blocks there were different to Brunei and Singapore and we only had three days to practice."
