The Brunei Darussalam Hockey Association (BDHA) took a major step in their preparations for the Southeast Asian (SEA) Games that the Sultanate will host in 2019 after revealing their strategic plan on Friday.

"This strategic plan is a long-term project that will help us prepare the country for the SEA Games in 2019, especially in hockey," said BDHA president Col (A) Pg Hj Kamal Bashah Pg Hj Ahmad during the Brunei Hockey 2014-2019 Strategic Planning workshop at the Lecture room of the Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium in Berakas.

"This is a big step in preparing the road map for hockey during the 2019 SEA Games.

"In this strategic plan, the focus will not just be on producing a good team to compete in the tournament, but also to make sure that the tournament will go smoothly.

"This will include improving the hockey pitch, facilities and equipment that will meet the international requirement standards.

"This workshop will help us to identify the problems, as well as, the opportunities that we are facing as an association.

"It will also help us plan the budgeting and other financial aspects. It is always very good to start planning earlier.

"Relevant agencies will be informed of our plans, and hopefully we will be able to get help or assistance from them," added the president.

Last year was a disappointing one for the national hockey team following the cancellation of the World Hockey League and the postponement of the Borneo Games.

The postponement meant that the national were left with no top-level competitions until now.

The Sultanate was also supposed to see action at the Malaysian Games (SUKMA) in Pahang last year but failed to qualify after notching one win and one loss in the two-part match-test series.

The last competitive tournament the national team competed in was the Malaysia Airlines (MAS) 9-a-Side Borneo Hockey Invitational in Kota Kinabalu in May, where they won the plate category after defeating Goodwood Hockey Team 2-0 in the final.

The national team defeated Sabah 1-0 to win the gold medal in the 2007 edition of the Borneo Games in Kuching, which until today, remains the country's biggest achievement in the sport.

It was the first time the men's national hockey team won gold in the sport, picking up the dramatic win during the final day of the tournament.
