More than 350 runners are expected to participate in the Olympic Torch Run which starts at 7.30am today in the capital.

Maznah Badarudin, the Political and Public Affairs Officer of the British High Commission, told The Brunei Times yesterday that among the participants were pupils of Jerudong International School (JIS), St George's School, St Andrew's School and government schools.

British High Commissioner to Brunei Rob Fenn and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Pehin Orang Kaya Pekerma Laila Diraja Dato Seri Setia Hj Hazair Hj Abdullah are also expected to participate in the run.

The event will start with the flag-raising ceremony by Fenn at the Yayasan Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah (YSHHB) here.

Organised by the British High Commission, Ministry of Culture,Youth and Sports, Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC) and Jerudong International School which brought the 1948 Olympic Torch to Brunei the event will take runners through the capital covering a 2.5 kilometres route.

The torch will pass through five checkpoints and with the distance of one check point to the next is about 500 metres the run is expected to be completed in 40 minutes. The run is to mark the 200-day countdown to the Paralympics Games, which will be held in London this year. London last hosted the Olympics in 1948 and the original 1948 Olympic torch will be used for the relay.
