The national karatedo team are flying the flag high for the Sultanate after pocketing the country's first and second medal at the 13th Malaysia Games (Sukma) in Melaka.

Ampuan Nur Haziqah Hasyimah Ampuan picked up a bronze medal after finishing third in the Women's below 68kg Kumite event yesterday.

Defeated in the semi-finals round, Ampuan Nur Haziqah was joint third with Zyen Faiezane Dullie Marie of Sabah. S Nishanti won the gold for Negri Sembilan after beating Norazimah Md Ali of Terengganu in the final.

Brunei's medal drought ended on Saturday after Mohd Nabil Abd Malik won the bronze medal in the men's below 75kg kumite. It was a hat-trick of medals for the 22-year-old, who is competing in his third Sukma Games.

Mohd Nabil won silver in the men's kumite below 70kg category in Terengganu two years ago and came in third in the 2006 edition.

He was denied a better finish by Melaka's R Jayaraj in both instances.

This year's Sukma however marked a step-up for Mohd Nabil in terms of weight class as he competed in the men's below 75kg kumite.

With the competition running from June 10-19, the Sultanate stands a chance to improve on their showing from two years ago where they came home with two silver medals from karatedo.

Federal Territories currently lead the competition with 20 gold, 14 silver and 12 bronze medal while Sarawak follow with 14 gold, 16 silver and nine bronze medals in second place.

Hosts Melaka are in third with 14 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals.

One of the 15 participating states, Brunei is competing in 13 events at the Sukma - athletics, aquatics, badminton, bowling, cycling, fencing, karate, petanque, sepak takraw, silat, squash, tennis and wushu.

Brunei is represented by a contingent of 67 athletes, 16 coaches, five managers, 14 officials and two technical officers led by chef de mission Hj Rosmadee Hj Md Daud.

Brunei has been taking part as an invited team since the 5th Sukma in 1996 and their best finish was in 2004 when the national contingent returned with one gold, five silver and five bronze medals from Negri Sembilan.
