Brunei Darussalam is sending 23 athletes across four sports to compete in the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) in Vietnam, which will be held from May 12-23.

The Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) confirmed the representatives will be competing in e-sports, karatedo, pencak silat and wushu yesterday.

Five athletes have been selected to represent the country in karatedo, four in pencak silat, four in wushu and 10 in e-sports.

The national contingent will be led by Acting Deputy Director of Youth and Sports Haji Mohamad Rosfazilah bin Haji Yusly in his capacity as the chef de mission, and accompanied by 15 other officials, which will include the secretariat, team manager, coach and medical officer.

The country will be making its debut in e-sports in the much-anticipated multi-sporting showpiece.

Brunei first joined the Southeast Asian Games in 1977. To this day, the country has collected 14 gold medals, 56 silver and 184 bronze overall. Its best record was at the 1999 SEA games, attaining four gold medals, 12 silver and 32 bronze medals as the host nation.

Brunei’s last participation at the SEA Games was in the Philippines in 2019, where the Sultanate attained two gold medals, five silver and six bronze.

National athletes and teams have been training for the event at the Sports Village, Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex while adhering to health guidelines to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The national contingent is expected to depart the country in stages, starting from May 6. Meanwhile, the national flag handover ceremony will be held on May 5.

The opening ceremony will take place on May 12 at the My Dinh National Stadium.
