His Royal Highness speaks to the swimming team

Brunei Darussalam’s national swimmers concluded their events at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games in Scotland on Tuesday, bringing the country’s swimming campaign to a close.
In support of the swimmers, His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council attended the swimming competition at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
In the women’s 50m freestyle heats, Hayley Wong clocked 27.73 seconds to finish 42nd out of 66 swimmers. She did not surpass her personal best of 27.19s and did not progress to the quarter-finals.
Sharmeen binti Mohamad Mharvin also competed in the women’s 50m freestyle heats, finishing in 27.63s to be placed 39th. She fell short of her personal best of 27.51s and also missed out on a place in the quarter-finals.
Meanwhile, national swimmer Joel Ling Thai Yu completed the men’s 100m backstroke heats in 59.12s. He finished 18th out of 29 swimmers, narrowly outside his personal best of 58.94s, and did not advance to the next stage of the competition.
Following the events, His Royal Highness expressed his appreciation for the commitment, discipline and fighting spirit displayed by the athletes throughout the Games. His Royal Highness also voiced confidence that the experience gained from competing at this level would serve as a catalyst for them to continue improving. His Royal Highness encouraged the athletes to remain dedicated to their training and strive for greater success in future competitions.
His Royal Highness also urged them to maintain their determination, focus and commitment in every training session as part of their preparations for upcoming international championships.
Overall, the participation of Brunei’s athletes in athletics, swimming and weightlifting at the Commonwealth Games provided exposure, enhancing their confidence, maturity and readiness to compete at future international competitions while continuing their efforts to bring honour and distinction to the nation. – JAMES KON
