Brunei Darussalam’s swimmers and athletes continued their campaign at the 23rd Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland on Monday, with two national track athletes achieving new personal bests.

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), attended the athletics competition at Scotstoun Stadium to support Brunei Darussalam’s representatives.

Md Nazrul Putera bin Faeiz Firdaous delivered an impressive performance in the men’s 100 metres, clocking 10.81 seconds to eclipse his previous personal best of 11.08 seconds. He finished 53rd out of 73 competitors.

National sprinter Nur Syafiqah binti Abdullah Md Mukhlis also recorded a personal best after completing the women’s 100 metres in 13.46 seconds, improving on her previous mark of 13.54 seconds. She was placed 50th among 52 runners and did not advance to the next round. Following the events, His Royal Highness met with Md Nazrul Putera and Nur Syafiqah to congratulate them on their personal best performances. His Royal Highness also commended their determination, discipline and commitment, while encouraging them to continue striving for greater success in future international competitions.

Meanwhile, at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre, Sharmeen binti Mohamad Mharvin finished 23rd out of 40 competitors in the women’s 50-metre backstroke after posting a time of 30.63 seconds. She did not advance to the quarter-finals and narrowly missed the national record of 30.48 seconds.

Joel Ling Thai Yu also competed in the men’s 100-metre freestyle, finishing 48th among 67 swimmers with a time of 53.59 seconds, not enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals. – James Kon
