The first group of Brunei Darussalam’s contingent departed for Glasgow, Scotland, on Sunday to compete in the 23rd Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place from July 23 to August 2.
The six-member delegation comprises three national swimmers and three officials, including the chef de mission, the head of secretariat who will also serve as the safeguarding officer, and a swimming coach.
Youth and Sports Director Hajah Umi Kalthum binti Haji Abdul Karim was present at Brunei International Airport to bid farewell to the delegation and offer words of encouragement ahead of the competition.
The departure ceremony began with the recitation of Doa Selamat led by Haji Ahmad Yaardy bin Haji Abdul Karim. It continued with words of advice for the national contingent and concluded with a group photograph.
Brunei Darussalam will compete in three of the 10 sports contested at this year’s Commonwealth Games: swimming, athletics and weightlifting.
The national swimmers are scheduled to begin their campaign at the Tollcross International Swimming Centre on Friday, July 24.
Also present at the airport were British High Commission in Brunei Darussalam Head of Chancery William Roberts, officers from the Youth and Sports Department, representatives of national sports associations and family members of the athletes.
The final group of the Brunei contingent is scheduled to depart for Glasgow on Tuesday, July 21.
The Commonwealth Games will officially begin on Thursday. – Lyna Mohamad
