Brunei Darussalam’s national wushu team made a strong start at the 4th Wushu Taolu World Cup in Haikou, Hainan, yesterday, with all three qualifying athletes finishing among the top five in their events.

The achievement marks a significant improvement from their rankings at last year’s World Championships.

The competition features the world’s top wushu practitioners, with only athletes who finished among the top eight in each event at the 2025 World Championships in Brazil eligible to compete.

National wushu athlete Walid Lachkar secured fourth place in the Men’s Changquan event with a score of 9.726, improving from his eighth-place finish at last year’s World Championships.

In the Men’s Nanquan event, Adi Salihin was placed fourth with 9.720 points, moving up one position from his fifth-place finish at last year’s World Cup. He delivered a confident performance, showcasing his speed and explosive power.

Meanwhile, Basma Lachkar finished fifth in the Women’s Taijiquan event after scoring 9.716 points.

She improved two places from her seventh-place finish at the previous World Championships, with her technical execution receiving praise.

The results saw all three Brunei athletes finish in the top five against world-class competition, highlighting the continued progress of the country’s wushu programme.

In today’s competition, Adi Salihin will compete in the Men’s Nangun event, while Basma Lachkar will take part in the Women’s Taijijian (Tai Chi Sword) event.

National wushu coach Li Hui and women’s taijiquan coach Zhao Chunjie expressed satisfaction with the athletes’ performances on the opening day.

“Our athletes stayed calm under pressure and demonstrated their training results. We look forward to continuing this momentum tomorrow and aiming for even higher goals,” they said.

The Brunei Wushu Team also expressed appreciation to the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and Brunei Wushu Federation for their support throughout the preparation and competition period. – James Kon
