The Brunei Darussalam wushu team finished fourth overall in the medal standings at the Oceania International Wushu Championships after an impressive haul of seven gold and six silver medals.
The team delivered an outstanding performance against athletes from 14 countries throughout the tournament.
On the final day of competition, young Bruneian athlete Meagan Marie Keasberry clinched her second gold medal of the meet after finishing first in the Junior Women’s Taijijian event with a score of 8.915. Silver went to a New Zealand athlete, while bronze was claimed by an Indian athlete.
National wushu athlete Emilia Chua Yee Qing also secured her second gold medal of the competition after claiming first place in the Youth Women’s Taijijian event with 8.74 points. Her compatriot, Lauren Emily Chua Yu Qing, took silver with 8.705 points as Brunei secured the top two spots in the event.
In the Junior Men’s Apparatus event, Brunei athlete Qayden Yii Ming Yi captured gold with a score of 8.93.
Brunei wushu athlete Adi Salihin also struck gold in the Senior Men’s Nan Gun event with an excellent score of 9.725. Silver went to a Singaporean athlete, while bronze was won by a Malaysian athlete.
The nation’s final gold medal came through Basma Lachkar, who delivered a smooth and fluid performance in the Senior Women’s Taijijian event to secure gold with a score of 9.73. Silver and bronze were both claimed by Malaysian athletes.
In the Youth Men’s Apparatus event, Bruneian athlete Walid Lachkar earned silver with 9.705 points. Gold was won by a Chinese athlete, while bronze went to a Malaysian athlete.
The coach of the Brunei wushu team said the athletes had fully demonstrated the results of their training on the competition stage, while strictly adhering to event discipline.
Head coach Li Hui and women’s coach Zhao Chunjie expressed great satisfaction with the athletes’ performances.
“Next, we will prepare for next month’s World Cup. We will adjust training plans and continue with hard and scientific training, fully preparing for both the World Cup and the Asian Games.”
The Brunei wushu team also extended special thanks to the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, and the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam for their strong support. – JAMES KON
