Brunei’s young wushu athlete Meagan Keasberry clinched the country’s first medal at the World Junior Wushu Championships in Tianjin, China, securing silver in the women’s Group B Taijijian event on Monday.
She scored 8.87 points, narrowly missing out on gold by just 0.003 points to a Vietnamese competitor who finished first with 8.873.
National wushu coach Li Hui said the slim margin reflected the high level of competition and precision in judging.
“This tiny difference demonstrates the close technical standards and performance levels among top athletes,” he said, adding that Meagan delivered a composed and seamless routine.
He noted that her performance effectively showcased the balance of strength and fluidity in Tai Chi, as well as the control and stability required in the Taijijian discipline.
Li Hui also praised the achievement as a result of sustained effort by both the athlete and coaching team, adding that it has brought pride to the Brunei contingent.
He said the team will continue to push for stronger results in the remaining events.
The championships have drawn some 1,250 young athletes from 78 countries, marking a record participation in the history of the tournament. – James Kon
