Athletes reminded to uphold nation’s honour

His Royal Highness Prince Haji Sufri Bolkiah, President of the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council (BDNOC), reminded athletes and officials representing Brunei Darussalam at the 3rd Asian Youth Games (AYG) to uphold the nation’s good name with integrity, discipline, and responsibility.

Delivering a sabda during the national flag handing-over ceremony on Thursday, His Royal Highness underscored the importance of maintaining sportsmanship and adhering to the rules set by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), particularly in avoiding prohibited substances.

“The Asian Youth Games is an important platform that brings together young athletes from across Asia. It serves as a stepping stone for our youth to demonstrate their competitive spirit and resilience in the face of challenges,” said His Royal Highness.

He added that the Games also provide opportunities for young athletes to develop their skills and reach their full potential in their respective sports at both regional and international levels, as they represent the future of Brunei’s sporting community.

His Royal Highness also urged sports officers and coaches to prioritise the safety and well-being of athletes, and to protect them from any form of harassment or abuse in line with the Olympic Council of Asia’s policies and the International Olympic Committee’s safeguarding framework.

“Do not be afraid to speak up or file a complaint if you experience any form of harassment or abuse,” His Royal Highness advised the athletes. “It is your right to seek help and protection. – James Kon
