Following an impressive showing of wushu skills, Brunei Darussalam’s national wushu team collected its first two gold medals on the second day of the 12th Asian Junior Wushu Championships in Wuxi City, Jiangsu Province, China.
Young Bruneian Wushu athlete Gwen Lee Yen Xi demonstrated the spirit of determination and bravery in front of the crowd when she competed in the children’s Nanquan fist event.
Her movements were powerful and forceful, with clear rhythm and solid stability. Her technical display was outstanding, and she won the championship with a high score of 9.096 to earn Brunei’s first gold medal of the championship.
Brunei’s second gold medal came from Abel Lim Wee Yuen in the men’s youth group Nanquan fist event, where he outperformed his rivals with his skills, high-quality jumps and speed, winning the gold medal with a score of 9.423.
Meanwhile Meagan Keasberry made a costly mistake in the Tai Chi sword event and was ranked seventh, while Lauren Emily Chua Yu Qing finished fifth in the Tai Chi sword event with a score of 9.210.
Situ Haili came in seventh in the girl’s group spear event and Quintus Yii Ming Jun ranked eighth in the men’s junior group Nan Quan fist event.
According to national wushu coach Li Hui, “Coach Zhao Chunjie and myself are very satisfied with the athletes’ performance today. We are proud of them.
“When the national anthem played and the national flag rose, we felt extremely excited and proud.
“We would like to express our gratitude to the Brunei Darussalam National Olympic Council, the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports as well as the Wushu Federation of Brunei Darussalam.” – James Kon
