Brunei wushu team shows promise in China

The Brunei National Wushu Team secured one silver and one bronze medal on the opening day of the First Asian Cup of Wushu Routines and the Second Asian Cup of Wushu Sanda 2025, held in Songyuan City, Jilin Province, China from July 5 to July 6.

On the first day of the competition, Basma Lachkar performed well in the women’s Tai Chi Chuan event. Her entire routine was executed smoothly, showcasing the characteristics of Tai Chi Chuan.

She completed the routine with high praise from the judges, earning a silver medal with a score of 9.670.

Basma qualified for the competition by finishing seventh in last year’s Asian Championships.

After returning home, under the guidance of coach Zhao Chunjie, she refined her movements and made significant progress in the Asian Cup.

Meanwhile, Brunei’s only bronze came from Adi Salihin in the men’s Southern fist event. During his routine, he executed all the difficult aerial movements.

His Southern Fist performance was full of power and energy, and he performed exceptionally well overall. With his technical skills and a score of 9.653, he won a bronze medal.

The wushu routine competition, a total of over 170 athletes from 16 countries participated.

The requirement for the event is that only those who have achieved a top eight ranking in the 2024 Asian Wushu Championships are eligible to take part in this Asian Cup.

The Brunei national team’s line-up for this competition was led by the national team’s head coach Li Hui as the referee, Zhao Chunjie as the coach and Hong Ruyuan as the assistant coach.

They are leading four qualified athletes to participate in this event.

The athletes are Adi Salihin taking part in the men’s Southern Fist and men’s Southern Staff events; Basma Lachkar competing in the women’s Tai Chi Chuan and Tai Chi Sword events; Hosea Wong Zhengyu, competing in the men’s Tai Chi Chuan and Tai Chi Sword events; and Able Lim Weeyuan, competing in the men’s Southern Fist event.

Able Lim Wee Yuan participated in the men’s Southern Fist event. Although he is under the age of 18, he is full of vigor and has abundant physical strength.

He achieved a score of 9.616 and ranked fifth in his group. According to national Wushu coach Li Hui, “Our coaching team believe that the overall performance of the four athletes in the morning’s competition was excellent. Each of them was very competitive and showed their best state.

“We hope that they will continue to strive and do their best in tomorrow’s competition to achieve more good results for Brunei.” – James Kon
