Brunei Darussalam won their first silver medal in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) through the women’s artistic team event at the Chroy Changvar International Convention and Exhibition Center in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.
The women’s pencak silat team comprising Nur Wasiqah Aziemah binti Rosihan, Norleyermah binti Haji Raya and Anisah Najihah binti Abdullah moved to the final after knocking out Philippines Franchette Anne Tolentino Elman, Jessapitulah Deka Crus and Shara Julia Jizmundo in the semi-final.
The Brunei team accumulated 9.945 points to Philippines’ 9.910 points to move into gold medal contention against Singapore.
The victorious Singapore team included Amirah binti Sahrin, Iffah Batrisyia binte Noh and Nur Ashikin binte Zulkifli. The final match-up proved another close affair with Brunei narrowly lost with 9.925 points compared to Singapore’s winning mark of 9.955 points.
Philippines and Cambodia shared the bronze as reward for making it to the top four. The national trio also added the silver medal that they won from the previous edition in Vietnam last year.
Meanwhile, the men’s team comprising Mohammad Hazim Ramliee, Muhammad Haziq Aqwa bin Md Iman Safwan and Muhd Ali Saifullah Abdullah bin Md Suhaimi won bronze in the artistic team event.
The Sultanate’s pencak silat representatives missed out a spot in the final after losing to Indonesia’s Anggi Faisal Mubarok, Asep Yuldan Sani and Rano Slamet Nugraha in the last four.
The Bruneians scored 9.91 points compared to their opponents’ total of 9.965 points.
In karate, Brunei added another bronze in the men’s kumite above 84 kilogrammes (kg) event through Mohd Izzudin Irfan bin Mohd Faisal.
It marks the country’s second and third bronze in the multi-sport meet during this edition following Md Harith bin Dahlan in the men’s kumite under 55kg event.
Indonesia won gold in the men’s artistic team event while bronze with Thailand claiming silver and Cambodia sharing the bronze with Brunei.
