The third batch of the Brunei Darussalam national contingent for the 32nd Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games) left for Phnom Penh, Cambodia yesterday.
The contingent comprising 56 individuals includes Acting Director of Youth and Sports Department Zainab binti Haji Morshidi as the Chef de Mission, secretarial and medical officers, e-sport manager and athletes.
The athletes will represent the country in billiards and snooker, aquatics, pencak silat, petanque, karate and athletics.
The Chef de Mission said they are hoping to bring a level of performance to be able to compete with other participants in the SEA Games.
“We hope they break their own records and national records during the Games,” she said, adding that Brunei has potential to win medals in martial arts events such as wushu, karate and pencak silat.
On the athletes’ health, Zainab assured that everyone will follow the strict standard operating procedures (SOPs) set by the organisers and will conduct regular swab tests.
Meanwhile, national swimmer Muhammad Isa bin Ahmad said he will be competing in the 100-metre relay, a first for the Sultanate in the SEA Games.
“Our goal is to beat our time trial record. Preparations have been well and we are all excited to compete,” said the national athlete.
Present to bid farewell to the contingent was Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad, Permanent Secretary (Culture) at the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports (MCYS) Pengiran Haji Mohd Hasnan bin Pengiran Haji Ali Hassan, Permanent Secretary (Sports) at the MCYS Pengiran Mohd Amirrizal bin Pengiran Haji Mahmud, Permanent Secretary (Youth) at the MCYS Haji Zakaria bin Haji Serudin and senior MCYS officials.
The fourth batch of national contingent is due to leave the country on May 6.
